Stretching across the countryside south of Belfast, County Down is home to picturesque towns, beautiful beaches, and incredible natural landscapes, offering families much to discover.
One of County Down’s most popular attractions is the Mourne mountain range. These mountains are the tallest in Northern Ireland and provide stunning views. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a complete beginner, there are several walks you can do in there with varying degrees of difficulty.
A visit to the beautiful seaside town of Newcastle is a must. Nestled on the coast beneath the peak of Slieve Donard, Newcastle is home to many fabulous beaches. Make sure also to explore Murlough Beach, which stretches for six km and offers beautiful views of the Mourne Mountains. Nearby Murlough Beach, you’ll find Dundrum Castle, built in the 12th century by Norman settlers, with hundreds of years’ worth of history to explore.
County Down is home to fantastic parks, which are excellent for cycling, walking, or playing sports. One of the most popular is Tollymore Forest Park, which has wild areas to explore and a vast children’s play area. There’s also Castlewellan Forest Park, which contains one of the world’s largest mazes.
Don’t miss the many exciting towns and cities in County Down. In the historic town of Downpatrick, you can see where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is buried at Down Cathedral. You can also visit the Down County Museum, which charts the areas rich history. Other interesting towns include Lisburn, Bangor, and Newtownards.
