Meals For 7-Month-Old: A Weekly Planner

Whether you are doing traditional weaning, baby led weaning or a combination of both, we've put together a week of meals you might like to make for your 7-month-old that can be enjoyed by the whole family too.

At 7 months old babies aren't expected to be eating three whole meals a day as a lot of their calories still come from milk, their mealtimes are more about exploring new foods and gaining confidence with textures and flavours. It's great to offer your baby food at each meal you eat and sit together as family as this encourages them to copy you.

Remember that all babies learn to eat in their own time and it can take many, many attempts before your 7-month-old will try something. They will eat more some days than others and this is also totally normal, just keep offering, even if most of it ends up on the floor. If you're feeling stressed about weaning, leave it and try again at the next meal.

Monday

From 6 months babies start needing extra iron in their diets, as they no longer get enough from their usual milk. Red meat is a great option from 7 months as it is high in iron.

Breakfast: Peanut butter toast fingers with fruit dip.

Ingredients: 1 slice of wholemeal bread, 1 tsp. peanut butter, 1/2 mashed banana.

Method:

Toast the bread until golden.

Spread the peanut butter over the toast and cut into fingers.

Serve the toast fingers with the mashed banana on the side to dip (or with a spoon).


Lunch: Omelette.

Ingredients: 1 small onion, 1 medium egg, 4 cherry tomatoes, a sprinkle of grated cheese, 1 tbsp. vegetable oil.

Method:

Whisk the egg in a bowl.

Add the cheese.

Finely chop the onions and quarter the tomatoes.

Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion until soft, then add the tomatoes.

Pour in the egg.

Cook until the base is golden, around 2-3 minutes.

Leave to cool then cut into fingers and serve.


Dinner: Easy spaghetti bolognese.

Ingredients: (Serves 4) 500g minced beef, 1 large red onion, 2 cloves garlic, 1 carrot, 500g passata, 1 tbsp. dried herbs, 2 tbsp. olive oil, cooked spaghetti.

Method:

Finely chop the onion, garlic and carrot.

In a pan add the oil, onion and garlic and cook until soft.

Add the carrot and mince (breaking up the meat).

Cook until no longer red then add the passata and dried herbs.

Leave to simmer for 10 minutes.

Serve with spaghetti.


Tuesday

Adding vegetables to pasta dishes can be an excellent way to get vegetables into your 7-month-old babies diet.

Breakfast: Porridge.

Lunch: Sweet potato dippers.

Ingredients: 1 small sweet potato, 1 tbsp. vegetable oil, 2 tbsp. sour cream.

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.

Cut the sweet potato into finger size pieces.

Brush the pieces with oil and place on a baking tray.

Bake for 20-30 minutes until soft and starting to crisp.

Remove any excess oil with kitchen tissue.

Allow to cool and serve with sour cream to dip.


Dinner: Macaroni cheese.

Ingredients: (can be multiplied to make enough for a family) 20g macaroni, 5g grated cheese, 4 cherry tomatoes, 1/2 tsp. vegetable oil spread, 1/2 tsp. plain flour, 40ml full fat milk, 30g frozen peas.

Method:

Cook the macaroni according to the instructions.

Quarter the tomatoes.

In a separate pan, melt the spread on a low heat. Add the flour and mix well. Add the milk whilst stirring continuously until smooth and thick. Add the cheese and tomato and mix well.

Drain the pasta and combine with the sauce.

In a small pan of boiling water, cook the peas until soft and add to the pasta.

Serve either blended, mashed or as finger foods.

Wednesday

Risotto is a great way to introduce fish from 7 months old.

Breakfast: Cereal.

Rice Krispies and Cheerios make great first cereals and can be served with or without milk (either your babies usual milk or full fat cows milk). You could also add fruit such as blueberries cut in half.


Lunch: Cheese sandwich fingers.

Ingredients: 1 slice of white bread, 1 tbsp. of full fat cream cheese, 2 finger sized sticks of cucumber.

Method:

Spread the cream cheese onto the bread and fold in half.

Press down and cut into fingers.

Serve with cucumber sticks.


Dinner: Fish risotto.

Ingredients: (Serves 4) 1 small onion finely chopped, 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped, 300g risotto rice, 50g parmesan, 1.5L low salt vegetable stock, 50g butter, 4 salmon fillets, 200g frozen peas.

Method:

Preheat oven to 180 degrees.

Bake the salmon in an ovenproof dish for 20 minutes.

Bring the stock to boil and keep on a low simmer.

In a separate pan, melt half the butter and add the onion, cooking until soft. Add the garlic.

Stir in the rice and coat in the butter. Continue stirring until the rice becomes shiny and transparent at the edges.

Add the stock, a ladle at a time, and stir continuously until the rice is cooked (approx. 30 minutes).

Stir through the other half of the butter and the cheese.

In a separate pan, cook the peas until soft and add to the rice.

Flake in the salmon and mix well.


Thursday

Pancakes and pasta make great finger foods for baby led weaning from 7 months old, whilst beans are a good source of iron.

Breakfast: Pancakes.

Ingredients: 1 mashed banana, 1 egg, butter for frying, 2 tbsp. yoghurt.

Method:

Crack the egg into a bowl and whisk.

Add the mashed banana and mix.

Heat the butter in a pan on a medium heat.

Add 1 tbsp of mixture per pancake.

Cook for 2 minutes on each side or until brown.

Serve with the yoghurt to dip and perhaps some fruit fingers too.


Lunch: Pesto pasta.

Ingredients: 20g penne pasta, 1 tbsp. pesto, a sprinkle of grated cheese.

Method:

Cook the pasta according to instructions.

Drain and stir in pesto.

Add cheese.

Serve either blended or as finger foods.


Dinner: Mixed bean hot pot.

Ingredients: 1/4 small onion, 1 small wedge aubergine, 1 small wedge courgette, 1 small wedge pepper, 1 tsp. vegetable oil, 1/2 tbsp. plain flour, 1/2 tbsp. tomato puree, 50g chopped tomatoes, 100g mixed beans, 25g frozen sweetcorn, 1/3 small baked potato.

Method:

Bake the potato as you normally would.

Chop the onion, garlic, aubergine, courgette and pepper.

Heat oil in a pan then add onions and garlic. Cook until softened.

Add remaining vegetables and cook for 5 minutes.

Add flour, mix well and cook for 1 minute.

Add the tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, beans and sweetcorn.

Cover and cook on a low heat until thickened (approx. 12 minutes).

Serve 1/4 of the bean hot pot with 1/3 of a baked potato. This could be blended or mashed.

Friday

Finger foods are great for a 7 month old's development of hand-eye coordination.

Breakfast: Fruit fingers.

Serve a selection of fruit such as melon cut into finger sized pieces.


Lunch: Easy scrambled egg.

Ingredients: 1 small egg, 1 tbsp. whole milk, 1 tbsp. vegetable oil spread, 1 slice toast.

Method:

Crack the egg into a bowl and whisk.

Add the milk and stir.

Heat the spread in a pan.

Add the egg and stir continuously on a low heat.

Take off when the egg is cooked, before it turns rubbery.

Serve with toast fingers.

Saturday

From 7 months it's great to offer a variety of textures and flavours.

Breakfast: Dippy egg and soldiers.

Ingredients: 1 slice of white bread, 1 egg, butter.

Method:

Bring a saucepan of water to the boil.

Add the egg and simmer for 5 mins. Slice off the top of the egg.

Toast the bread, spread on the butter and cut into fingers.

You can spread the egg onto the toast instead of dipping if preferred.


Lunch: Sweet potato croquettes.

Ingredients: 100g uncooked lentils, 300g sweet potato, 70g grated carrot, 100g grated cheese, 1 large egg, 40g frozen peas, olive oil, 240ml low salt stock.

Method:

Add the lentils and stock to a saucepan and bring to a boil, simmer until stock is almost gone. Turn heat off, cover and leave for 10 mins.

Pierce sweet potato and microwave for approx. 6 mins.

Remove the skin and mash.

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

Add the lentils, mashed sweet potato, carrot and cheese to a bowl and mix. Then add the egg and mix again. Followed by the peas.

Shape into approx. 15 croquettes and place on a baking tray lined with parchment.

Brush with the olive oil and bake for approx. 30 mins until slightly crisp. Perfect served as finger foods.


Dinner: Chicken curry.

Ingredients: 1 diced onion, 1 diced carrot,1/2 diced red pepper, 1/4 tsp. diced ginger, 1/4 tsp. mild curry powder, 2 tsp vegetable oil, 1 diced chicken breast, 150ml low salt chicken stock, 75g frozen peas, 3 tbsp. yoghurt.

Method:

Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the onion, ginger, carrot and pepper. Cook for 3-4 mins.

Add curry powder and chicken, then fry until sealed.

Add stock, cover with a lid, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 mins.

Add the peas and leave for 5 mins.

Add the yoghurt and serve. This works well blended.


Sunday

Easy meals to make a 7-month-old on a slow Sunday. Eating together is a great way to encourage your baby.

Breakfast: Yoghurt and fruit.

Yoghurt served with smashed raspberries.

Lunch: Soup.

Soup of any flavour, just look out for the levels of salt.

Dinner: Sunday roast.

No recipe needed for this one! Just offer your 7-month-old some of your delicious roast dinner. A little meat, some potato, some vegetables and not forgetting a Yorkshire pudding. This could be served blended or as finger foods. Enjoy!
