The humble leaf is a vital organ in the lives of many plants.
Leaves are responsible for the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O) from the air, in order for plants to convert this to glucose and oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis and the glucose fuels plants with the energy they need to function properly.
You'll rarely see a single leaf alone on a plant stem, as the whole plant needs a lot of CO2 and H2O to be absorbed at a time in order to have enough energy. Leaves absorb a lot of sunlight into their bodies, this sunlight acts as fuel for the photosynthesis process to take place.
You may or may not be aware of the fact that leaves have pores on their surface (little holes called 'stomata') which open and close to make sure the amounts of CO2 and other gases in the surrounding atmosphere are just right. What's more, the largest undivided leaf is the giant edible arum, which can be up to 305cm across!
