How To Get A Blue Whale Into Your Child’s Bedroom

Whale in a bedroom

It’s amazing what you can find in a child’s bedroom, isn’t it? Today, I noticed the skeleton of a blue whale stuffed into one corner.

To be fair on my daughter, it was me who put it there. The Natural History Museum has made several of its key artefacts available as augmented reality downloads. This whale skeleton -- familiar to anyone who’s visited the museum -- is perhaps the most spectacular.

You can view the skeleton on any smartphone, superimposed over whatever your camera is pointing at. You can also position the bones where you like, zoom in, rotate and even climb inside like Jonah. It’s a really clever way to get your kids excited about natural history.

To make it work, you’ll need Google’s Arts & Culture app (available for iPhone or Android), then just search for the Natural History Museum’s stuff.

Now, I think I’ll release the whale back into the wild…
